Most free patterns are a flat PDF. These open in the editor, which is what matters when the fabric in your drawer isn't the count the chart was drawn for.
Resize before you buy fabric
Scale a chart up or down and the stitch count and finished size follow, so you cut the right piece once.
Use the thread you already own
Switch to Anchor, Madeira or Cosmo, or restrict the palette to the skeins in your stash. Colors are re-matched by color distance, not renamed from a lookup table.
Add a name or a date
Type it in a stitch-friendly font, place it under the motif, and it becomes part of the chart.
Track it as you stitch
The chart becomes a checklist you can mark off on your phone, and it syncs to your laptop.
Free for personal use and for gifts. Selling what you stitch is fine; reselling the chart is not.
