About Bernat Super Value

Bernat Super Value is the workhorse worsted acrylic that sits directly opposite Red Heart Super Saver on the same shelf: 100% acrylic, worsted weight, machine washable and dryable, in a 197 g / 7 oz skein carrying roughly 426 yd (389 m). Bernat, Red Heart and Caron are all Spinrite brands, so the three lines are stocked together and behave the same way in a fabric.

Where Super Value distinguishes itself is the heathers. The range leans harder on mixes, flecks and marls than its competitors do, which changes what a finished blanket looks like: color with visible texture in it rather than flat blocks. This chart covers all 60 currently listed colorways with their manufacturer shade numbers, taken from the SKU rather than invented by us.

These hex values are approximate. Here is exactly how approximate.

No yarn manufacturer publishes sRGB values. There is no official Bernat hex list to copy, so every value here was measured from Bernat's own product photograph of the skein: locate the skein in the frame, mask out the printed paper band across its middle, discard the shaded underside and the sheen on the acrylic, and cluster what remains in CIELAB.

That is a repeatable measurement rather than a guess, and it is still a photograph — uncalibrated, compressed, lit by whoever shot it, showing a dye lot that will not come back. Measured against an independent human reading of the same photos, the sampling runs about 2.6 L* darker and 4.8 chroma units duller on average. Relative relationships between shades survive that; absolute values do not.

The shades to double-check

Deep saturated greens and teals, as everywhere in this method. Bernat is the closest-agreeing of the three yarn ranges we chart — a median disagreement of ΔE 4.7 against independent estimates of the same photos, and not one of the six largest disagreements across all three brands is a Bernat shade — but "closest-agreeing" is not "verified". The systematic bias is identical, it simply has fewer very dark saturated shades to expose it. Do not choose a dark green or teal from the screen.

One name is worth a note: Yellow samples as a soft butter yellow (#faf3ca), distinctly paler than Bright Yellow. That is the yarn, not a sampling error — but if a pattern says "yellow", check which one it means.

About the heathers

Heathers, mixes, flecks, marls and raggs are all kept in this chart, deliberately. They read as a single color at arm's length, which is the test that matters for a chart-worked blanket, so one hex is a fair description of them. Genuinely variegated and self-striping yarns are a different thing — one hex would lie about those, which is why Red Heart's 44 multicolor shades are excluded from its chart. Bernat's current range contains none, so nothing was held back here.

Five of the 60 are out of stock at the time of writing but still listed as current colors, and they are included.

Using these colors in a C2C blanket

Corner-to-corner crochet builds a picture from square blocks worked on the diagonal, one block per chart cell. There is no blending and no fractional stitch, so the yarn color is the design — a graphghan is only as good as its palette.

Super Value's heathers are genuinely useful here and slightly awkward at the same time. Useful, because a heathered background gives a large flat area some life without adding a second color. Awkward, because a heather sits closer to its neighbors in color space than a flat shade does, so two heathers that look distinct in the skein can blur into each other across a blanket. If you are using several, preview the chart at full size before buying.

And whatever the palette, buy all the yarn for one color at once. "No dye lot" on an acrylic band means skeins within a production run match each other; it does not promise that a skein bought in March matches one bought in November.
