Which range is which

  • DMC Satin — rayon, six strands, a silk-like sheen. Numbers start with S.
  • DMC Light Effects — polyester, six strands, a metallic, jewel or glow finish. Numbers start with E.
  • DMC Étoile — cotton with a lurex thread through it, six strands, a sparkle. Numbers start with C.

All three are stitched like regular stranded floss, so a pattern chart that lists them works the same way as one that does not. Rayon and metallic threads fray and tangle more than cotton: cut shorter lengths and let the needle hang to untwist.

FAQ

What are DMC Satin, Light Effects and Étoile?
They are DMC’s specialty stranded flosses. Satin is a rayon floss with a silk-like sheen, Light Effects is a polyester floss with a metallic, jewel or glow finish, and Étoile is cotton with a lurex sparkle thread. Each has its own number series: S for Satin, E for Light Effects and C for Étoile.
How many colors does each range have?
Satin has 60 colors, Light Effects has 36 and Étoile has 35. This page lists all three, each in its own section.
Are the specialty floss numbers the same as regular DMC floss numbers?
The numbers are prefixed so they do not clash: S818 is a Satin color, E940 is a Light Effects color and C310 is an Étoile color. Satin and Étoile follow regular DMC shades closely, so the closest regular match is often the number without the letter. Light Effects colors are metallic and have no true solid twin.
Why do the swatches look flat?
A screen cannot show shine or sparkle, so each swatch shows the base color only. Satin, Light Effects and Étoile all catch the light on the stitch in a way these colors do not. Compare real skeins when the effect matters.
Can I use regular DMC floss instead?
You can match the color, not the finish. Tap a color to see the closest regular DMC match. For a small highlight, it is common to keep the specialty thread for just that area. The DMC color chart has the full regular range.

Why do thread colors look different on my screen?
