Cloud and Local Patterns
On the Stitchmate desktop app your patterns are files on your computer. Sign in and you can also keep a copy in your account. What "linked" means, what the badges say, and what happens when you open, upload or change a pattern in two places.

Your patterns live on your computer. The cloud is an optional second copy.
The short version
Stitchmate Desktop keeps your patterns as files on your computer. They open and save with no internet and no account.
If you sign in, you can also keep a copy in your account (the cloud). That copy is how a pattern reaches your other computers and the web app. Nothing goes to your account unless you upload it, and nothing on your computer is deleted because of something in your account.
Two places, one pattern
When you upload a file, or open a pattern from your account, Stitchmate remembers that the file and the cloud copy are the same pattern. That is what linked means. It is how Stitchmate updates the pattern you already have instead of piling up copies of it.
What you do
- Make and edit as usual. Your changes save to the file on your computer automatically. Your account is not touched.
- Upload to cloud when you want a copy in your account. Open the pattern's menu on the On this computer tab and choose Upload to cloud. Once it is linked, the same menu item says Update cloud copy.
- Open from your account on the In my account tab. If you already have a file for that pattern, Stitchmate opens it. If your account has a newer version, the file is brought up to date first and the old version is kept in the pattern's history. A new file is made only when you do not have one yet.
- Get latest on a linked file brings down the cloud copy when it is newer.
What the badges mean
On the On this computer tab, each pattern shows where it stands:
- Synced: the file and the cloud copy are the same.
- Local: only on this computer. It has never been uploaded.
- Not uploaded: you changed it on this computer since the last upload.
- Cloud newer: the copy in your account is newer than this file.
If you change it in two places
Say you edit a pattern on your laptop and, before you upload, edit the same pattern in the web app. Stitchmate notices the next time you open it from your account and asks what to do:
- Keep both: your file is saved next to the other as a separate copy, then the linked file takes the account's version. Nothing is overwritten.
- Use my version: your version replaces the one in your account.
- Use the account's version: the account's version replaces your file.
- Decide later: nothing changes.
Whatever is replaced is saved to the pattern's version history first, so you can always go back.
Where your files are
Your patterns are in the Stitchmate folder inside your Documents folder. From the Home window, choose Help → Reveal Pattern Folder to open it. You can organize them into folders there; moving a file does not unlink it from your account.
Folders on your computer and collections in your account are separate: moving a pattern between them does not change the other.
