Every brand of embroidery floss numbers its colors differently, and none of them publish a conversion to a competitor. This page is the universal chart: pick the brand you have and the brand you want, and get the closest code with a percentage showing how close it really is. The big table below is the classic DMC conversion chart — DMC against Anchor, Madeira, Cosmo, J&P Coats and Sullivans on one line per color — and the brand directory after it covers every other palette we hold, from Soie d'Alger to Perler beads.
How the match is calculated
Each color is compared in CIELAB space using CIEDE2000, the same perceptual color-difference formula used in print and paint matching. The percentage on every result is that distance, rescaled so that 100% means identical swatches. The thresholds are simple:
- 93–100% — Virtually identical. Hard to tell apart even side by side.
- 85–92% — Very close. A minor difference visible only in direct bright light.
- 75–84% — Good match. Noticeable when compared directly, fine in most projects.
- Below 75% — Approximate. Check the ranked alternatives; two strands of neighboring shades may sit closer than any single skein.
Percentages compare our sampled swatches, not skeins in your hand. Dye lots shift, fabric changes how a color reads, and sheen matters: a silk or rayon at 95% will still look brighter than the cotton it replaced because the fibre reflects more light.
Which brands convert cleanly
Stranded cotton to stranded cotton is the easy case. DMC, Anchor, Madeira, Cosmo and J&P Coats all make solid six-strand cotton with broadly similar ranges, and most of the chart lands above 85%. The exceptions cluster where one brand ships five steps between two shades and the other ships four — skin tones, grays, and the long blue and green runs.
Hand-dyed and overdyed floss (Weeks Dye Works, Classic Colorworks, The Gentle Art, ThreadworX, Valdani) is matched to the dominant tone of the skein. The stitched result varies by design, so treat the percentage as "closest solid" rather than "same color". Most people run this direction to substitute a solid when a hand-dye is out of stock.
Silk, wool and metallics match on hue and lightness, but the finish is the point of using them. A Vineyard Silk or Silk & Ivory shade at 96% is the same color with more sheen; an Appleton crewel wool at 90% is the same color with none. Kreinik and other metallics are matched on their base tone and will always read lighter under a lamp.
Converting a whole pattern

Is there an official DMC conversion chart?
No manufacturer publishes a conversion to a rival brand, and the printed charts that circulate are hand-compiled from thread cards. This chart is computed instead: every code in one brand is compared against every code in the other using perceptual color distance, and the percentage shows how close the best match came. Where the two ranges genuinely have no equivalent, you see it rather than being handed a confident wrong number.
How accurate is a thread conversion chart?
Blacks, whites and strong primaries convert almost perfectly in every brand. The losses cluster where one range has finer steps than the other — skin tones, grays, and the long blue and green families. A match above 93% is hard to tell apart on fabric; 85–92% shows only in direct light; below 75% is a visible shift and worth checking the alternatives or blending two strands.
Can I convert DMC to Weeks Dye Works, Gentle Art or Classic Colorworks?
Yes — pick the hand-dyed brand as the target. Those skeins are overdyed, so the match is to the dominant tone of the skein and the stitched result will vary more than a solid-to-solid conversion. Going the other way, from a hand-dye to DMC, is the usual reason people run it: to substitute a solid when the hand-dyed color is out of stock.
Does it convert Anchor to DMC as well as DMC to Anchor?
Every pairing runs in both directions. Use the swap button between the two brand pickers. Anchor to DMC tends to score higher because DMC has the larger range, so every Anchor shade has somewhere close to land.
Why do two DMC numbers convert to the same Anchor number?
Because the ranges are different sizes: 489 DMC colors cannot map one-to-one onto 446 Anchor colors, so somewhere two neighboring DMC shades must share an Anchor code. That is arithmetic, not an error. When it happens in a gradient, convert the whole run and judge the spacing between shades rather than each shade alone.
