How to Read a C2C Graph (and Turn It Into Written Rows)

One square is one block, you start in a corner, and you work diagonals — which is why the row count never matches the graph. Here is how to follow one without counting the whole thing twice.

A C2C graph is a colored grid, and reading it comes down to three facts: one square is one block, you start in a corner, and every row is a diagonal — not a straight line across. Get those three straight and the rest is counting.

The reason people stall on their first graph is that none of that is visible in the picture. The grid looks like a chart you would read left to right, top to bottom, so that is how everyone tries to read it first. It is not how the fabric is built.

One square is one block

In corner-to-corner crochet, each square of the graph is one block: a chain-3 plus 3 double crochet cluster, in US terms. Not one stitch — one cluster of three, plus its turning chain. (US terms matter here more than anywhere else in the craft: "double crochet" means a different stitch in UK terminology, and a pattern worked in the wrong one comes out the wrong height. Every pattern should say which it uses. This one is US, and the Craft Yarn Council keeps the standard abbreviation and hook-size tables everyone in the craft is working from.)

Blocks are why the finished size is easy to estimate. In worsted weight on a 5 mm (H-8) hook, a block lands at roughly an inch square, so a graph 50 blocks wide finishes around 50 inches wide before you add a border. Your tension will move that, which is what a gauge swatch is for — work a 4 × 4 block square, measure it, divide. Note the word: block, not square. In crochet a "square" is a granny square or a motif, so patterns and graph tools that count "squares" are talking about the graph, not the fabric. Worth knowing when you compare two patterns that describe the same thing with different words.

Why the rows run diagonally

You do not start at a corner of the graph and work across the bottom edge. You start with a single block in the corner, and then each row you work travels diagonally across the graph, at 45 degrees to the grid.

Row 1 is one block, in the corner. Row 2 is two blocks, sitting diagonally against it. Row 3 is three. Each row adds a block at each end until you reach the far edge, and then the rows shrink back down to a single block in the opposite corner. The fabric grows as a triangle, becomes a full rectangle, and closes as a triangle again. That shaping — where it turns, and what happens at each corner — is its own subject, covered in C2C increases and decreases.

The practical consequence for reading: to find row 12, you do not count 12 squares down the side. You count the twelfth diagonal from your starting corner. On paper, laying a ruler at 45 degrees across the graph is genuinely the fastest way to find your place.

The row count nobody expects

Here is the number that surprises everyone. A graph W blocks wide by H blocks tall is worked as W + H − 1 rows.

  • A 60 × 60 graph is 119 rows, not 60.
  • A 100 × 60 graph is 159 rows.
  • A 200 × 199 graph — a large, detailed blanket — is 398 rows.

The widest row has as many blocks as the shorter side of the graph. On a square graph, the widest row is exactly halfway through: row 60 of 119.

This is worth knowing before you start, not after. It changes how you plan a project — 119 rows of increasing-then-decreasing length is a very different mental model from 60 rows of equal length — and it is the number to check any pattern against. If a written C2C pattern for a 60 × 60 graph does not end at row 119, something is wrong with the pattern.

Following one row without losing your place

Two things reverse on every single row, and both of them will get you.

The working direction reverses. Row 1 travels one way along its diagonal; row 2 travels back the other way. So a run of colors you read left to right on one row is worked in the opposite order on the next. Reading a graph by eye means mentally flipping every second row, which is exactly the kind of small repeated task that goes wrong at 11pm.

The side facing you reverses. Row 1 is the right side (RS), row 2 the wrong side (WS), and so on, alternating all the way to the end. In plain C2C this does not change how you make the stitches, but it does tell you which face you are looking at — which matters when you are matching a graph to what is in your lap, and it matters a lot if you are adding surface detail later.

The reliable method for hand-reading: work one diagonal at a time, mark the row you are on, and count runs of color rather than individual squares. "Cream 11, teal 48" is a thing you can hold in your head to the end of a row. "Cream, cream, cream, cream…" is not.

From graph to written rows

Written row-by-row instructions are the same graph, expressed as the rows you actually work. Each line gives you a direction, a side, the runs of color in working order, and the block count for that row. Here is what that looks like — this is the format Stitchmate's C2C crochet pattern maker prints:

Reading it left to right: the arrow is the working direction for that row, which is why it flips every line. [RS] and [WS] are the side facing you. Each (Color) x N is a run — that color, that many blocks, in the order you work them. The count in brackets at the end is the row's block total, and it is the most useful thing on the line: at the end of every row you count what you made and compare. Two blocks off is a five-minute fix now and a two-hour frog in forty rows.

These rows are computed from the graph rather than transcribed by hand, which is the point — a human transcribing 398 rows of run lengths will make an error, and you will find it with a hook in your hand.

The same graph, worked another way

A graphghan is any chart-worked blanket. C2C is one technique for making one; it is not a synonym. The same colored grid can be worked as a single crochet graphghan (straight rows, one square = one single stitch, direction alternating every row), as tapestry crochet, as filet, or as mosaic. The graph does not change. What changes is the unit each square stands for and, with it, the finished size and the fabric.

In C2C, no — one square is one block, which is three double crochets plus its turning chain. In a single crochet graphghan, one square is one single stitch. Same graph, different unit, very different finished size, so check which technique a pattern assumes before you work out your gauge.
Can I use a cross stitch chart as a C2C graph?
Yes, if it is whole stitches only. A cross stitch chart is a colored grid, and a C2C graph is a colored grid, so a chart with no fractional stitches, no backstitch, and a manageable color count converts directly.
