Where hex codes come from

Hex codes turn up wherever color is digital: a brand's logo color, a palette from a design app, the color picker in a photo editor, a Pantone-style swatch someone sent you. The tool above turns any of them into thread you can buy. Paste the code and it ranks every DMC color by how close it looks, using the same perceptual matching as our thread conversion charts.

From one color to a whole picture

For a single color, a hex code is quickest. To pull a full palette out of a photo or artwork, use the image to thread palette tool, which finds the main colors in an image and matches each to floss. To turn the whole image into a pattern, start a photo to cross stitch pattern.

Understanding match quality

  • 93–100% — Virtually identical. Hard to tell apart even side-by-side.
  • 85–92% — Very close. Minor differences visible only in direct bright light.
  • 75–84% — Good match. Noticeable when compared directly, but works well in most projects.
  • Below 75% — Approximate. No DMC shade sits close to this color; check the alternatives.

FAQ

How do I find the DMC color for a hex code?
Type or paste the hex code (for example #7a3b5c) into the box above. The tool lists the closest DMC floss colors, best match first, each with a match percentage. RGB values like 122, 59, 92 work too.
Can I match a hex code to Anchor or Madeira instead?
Yes. Change the thread brand next to the color box. The same matching runs against that brand, so you can find a Madeira or Anchor shade for a hex code just as easily.
Why does the thread look different from the color on my screen?
A screen makes color with light; thread reflects it. The hex value of a floss is an approximation sampled from photos or scanned color cards, and monitors differ. Use the match to narrow the choice, then check the skein in daylight before buying a lot of it.
How is the match percentage calculated?
We use CIEDE2000, the industry standard for perceptual color difference. 93%+ is virtually indistinguishable; below 75% means a visible difference.

Cross stitch is a real commitment — real thread, real hours, real frustration if the pattern doesn't work. Stitchmate lets you see exactly what you're getting into before you buy the first skein.
